Franklin V. Canning, a New York City druggist, established the Dentyne chewing gum brand in 1899 with a name that combined the words dental and hygiene.

It was touted as an oral hygiene product that would prevent tooth decay, freshen breath, and keep teeth white. The original recipe for this chewing gum can now be offered under the Dentyne Classic brand.

Other Dentyne flavor brands include Dentyne Ice, Dentyne Fire, Dentyne Tango, Dentyne Shine, and Dentyne Pure. Since 2000, Cadbury, a British multinational candy firm, has owned the Dentyne brand.

4. Dubble Bubble

Double Bubble is the first chewing gum brand designed exclusively for inflating air bubbles. The recipe for this chewing gum brand was developed by accountant Walter Diemer. He worked at the US chewing gum firm Fleer, by changing the original recipe of his company’s founder, Frank Henry Fleer.

After launching Dubble Bubble, this chewing gum brand quickly became well-known around the world, spawning a completely new area of the chewing gum industry that caters to the demands of those who enjoy blowing bubbles.

5. Eclipse

Wrigley Company, a major chewing gum producer, launched their new brand of chewing gums and breath mints, Eclipse, to the public in 1999 as their first attempt at making pellet chewing gums.

The Eclipse brand is completely focused on allowing users to instantly freshen their mouths and breathe with a strong peppermint scent.

6. Extra

This chewing gum is widely marketed in North America and Europe and has no sugar. It debuted in 1987 and quickly became one of the most popular chewing gums in the United States. This was feasible because this was the first chewing gum to use a newly created artificial sweetener, NutraSweet (aspartame and neotame), rather than natural sugar from saccharin. In the United Kingdom, chewing gums marketed as Extra were renamed Orbit in 2015.

The first three varieties of chewing gum hit the market in the United States in March 2007 and swiftly spread to other international markets such as Canada, continental Europe, Russia, China, and others.
